Why CareerFocus Works

Community colleges from Oregon to North Carolina have seen enrollment figures rise and community support increase as a result of CareerFocus. They’ve experienced the enthusiastic support of faculty and students for the magazine, and they’ve witnessed the erosion of old stereotypes about community colleges.

The first job of CareerFocus is to inform and inspire. After that it explores the many avenues to an education and a meaningful career.

It is first a magazine about careers, and secondly about the community college programs that make these reality. By featuring bright, motivated students who have sometimes overcome great odds to get their education, CareerFocus presents a true picture of both students and the college.

It doesn’t hurt that it’s also an attractive and readable magazine. The CareerFocus format appeals to a broad audience that includes:

High school-age students considering college for the first time (and their parents)

By featuring transfer programs and students, CareerFocus shows high school seniors how easy transfer is and lets their parents know how much they can save in escalating tuition costs by beginning with a community college education.

Articles about degree programs in technical health care fields also inform readers about the many good jobs available without a four-year degree.

Adult learners interested in a new career or moving up the career ladder in their profession

CareerFocus highlights flexible scheduling and student services that help adult students continue their education. Student profiles of parents, laid-off workers or students well into middle-age who are pursuing an education are an inspiration to many readers who might want an education but are reluctant to begin.

General readers who wouldn’t otherwise read college advertising or class schedules

Because CareerFocus is more than an advertisement for the college, readers pick it up for articles about workplace issues or career trends. In the process they will also encounter new information about the college and rethink old stereotypes.

This is what happened to Jeremy Nelson, a recent engineering graduate of the University of Michigan who read a Washtenaw Community College CareerFocus article on digital video production. It piqued his interest and he enrolled the next day. Jeremy completed the program and was serendipitously featured on the cover of an issue of the magazine.

The business community

CareerFocus shows employers your college is responsive to their training and job development needs. Advertisement opportunities in Careerfocus are another way for local business to reach out to the community and support the college.

Taxpayers

Most community colleges rely on local tax support. CareerFocus doesn’t just work when a millage election is coming up; it’s a continuous reminder to the community that your college is a valuable resource and a critical part of the local culture and economy.
